It takes standard 3.5" SATA drives the same as most desktop PCs, ordinary consumer versions are fine. I wouldn't expect problems with any modern drives, but have a mixture of Samsung F3 and F4 Ecogreen drives in mine. Everything you need to install them is included, such as trays and screws.

Thanks for the update, I did the update as suggested by yourself via onboard SATA and worked fine
I will however update as the eSata will eventually be needed
Actually AHCI mode for ports 4 & 5 (Internal SATA and external eSATA) cannot be enabled with this new version BIOS. I did not load default values after flashing this
and the parameters seem to have been used from my previous patched BIOS. However, I did reset to default today and AHCI mode was gone for the internal port. The good news is there is a patched NEW BIOS available also and
I flashed it right away to get AHCI back for said ports. Works.

Hi GMCInema,
Where is the new patched bios located? I looked through hardforum and the HP drivers and software page and saw no mention of an updated one (since the versions you posted about) or am I missing something? Also, what is the procedure to the flash? I downloaded the original modded BIOS zip you posted about, but there are 2 roms, 2 batch files and 1 executable in there, so not sure which rom to use or how to flash it, any assistance would be much appreciated
Many thanks,
R.

The patched BIOS based on the latest HP release is to be found here ...
Download also the latest original including the USBStick writer from HP
- execute the original and let it prepare your USB stick
- copy the PATCHED.ROM file (after extracting from the zip file) to the same USB stick
- copy the "flash.bat" file onto itself in the same directory and rename it say "ahci.bat"
- open "ahci.bat" in a text editor and replace the ORIGINAL.ROM filename with the PATCHED.ROM filename, save
(should look like this: kbd /"flash O41_ahci.rom -r 100000,10000 -r 1e0000,10000;q")
- put the USB stick in a USB port, and make sure you have a KB and Moitor attached to the server
- restart server and let it go through updating the BIOS with the original automatically
- at the command prompt enter AHCI, Return - this will execute flashing with the patched BIOS
- remove USB stick
- restart machine, enter BIOS with F10 and load defaults, save, restart and renter BIOS to configure your machine.

For anyone interested I've built a new WHS build based on my original (non-pp) WHS disk but integrated with the PP3 trial downloadable from MS (which makes a full WHS PP3 install), I've integrated all the latest drivers in to it so I have a complete working system on first boot after install, I've also put it all to a bootable USB drive so no need to install a ODD in to the unit to install.
I'll put a guide together if anyone wants it, as I know there are a few of you who were having problems slipstreaming or getting drivers installed.

Me too. I'm looking at one of these as a possible replacement. Can anyone confirm if sleep/standby is working properly for use with lights out?
In the process of writing the guide up today, however I've been unsuccessful so far in getting sleep to work, also hibernate won't enable using
powercfg.exe /hibernate ondue to having 4 GB ram and the machine using PAE.
I'm trying to find a work around though.

Thanks for the quick reply. Please post back if you get anything working. One of the key reasons I want to u/g is due to sleep/standby issues with my current server.

.....I have WHS installed on a 2.5" raid box (same as the Tranquil SAFE system) like zyphen proposed.
Care to suggest where to buy these from or are the Tranquil SSMs just as good / cheap. I've got a Microserver on it's way (£140 once the cashback comes) and like the idea of the Raid1 system volume plus 4 data drives available. Guess once I get the hardware sorted I'll be back reading this thread for the driver info. I intend sticking with WHS v1.
TIA

I guess you'd need access to a UK address and credit card. Can't say I've seen 'em at £99 though. I was more than happy with £140!

You seem to forget shipping costs from a theoretical UK address to DK and an individual running around for you so that you can make your "saving".
What you see is not real.

Managed to setup AHCI yesterday but I seem to be getting really slow transfer between system disk and drive pool. It starts quite fast then gets around halfway and slows down unbelievably. Copying off the server to other computers is fine it just seems to be internal transfers. Any advice would be appreciated. I have 250gb system disk that came with the system which is 7200 another 2TB 7200 drive, 1 x 500GB 5400 and 1 x USB drive which is set as my backup I also have 1 x500Gb 5400 not part as my pool but as a spare. I also upgraded my memory too 4GB at same time.
