File Name: Orbital Backup Configuration
File Submitter: Terry (WGS)
File Submitted: 06 Jun 2011
File Updated: 23 Sep 2011
File Category: Backup

Orbital Backup Configuration allows you to backup your Apple Mac to Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials or Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

The add-in uses the Mac Launchpad to configure all settings necessary to direct Time Machine backups to your server, without the need for complicated scripts or other manual workarounds.

Please review the documentation for details on support for OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.7 (Lion)

Nice, the Configuration Tool has been released!

I'm working on OSX Lion with Homeserver 2011. After renaming the OSX Lion Launchpad app i could install the Homeserver Launchpad app, works fine.
But now i want to use the Orbital Backup Configuration tool to configure the OSX backup with my homeserver.

If i open the configuration tool from my launchpad i got this message;

Posted Image

After i click 'OK' and filled in the form, and click on the 'Configure' button, i got this error message.

Does anyone know how I can solve this?

I have same problem as MasterWebber

the boolean stuff... I have gotten both "Cant make 1 into type boolean" and "Cant make 0 into type boolean" (when I tried to change to another valid username)

Note : my password contains special chars - like @ ! # - might that be the reason?

I got the same errors on my lion install (renamed launchpad).
I tried two different user accounts (one with regular characters) and different locations.

I did try to use timemachine before, so there might be some tweaks already in the system ?!

It said on the release email - that OSX Lion isn't supported, and won't be until Microsoft release a patch (sometime never).

Currently, the add-in only fully supports OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, due to the Launchpad issues previously reported with Windows Home Server 2011 and OS X 10.7 Lion. Once Microsoft get a fix in place for that issue, the add-in should work with Lion too. No ETA on that at this point, unfortunately

This problem with the double naming of launchpad.app is annoying but solveable.
For me (and others with the "boolean" error) we got a running whs launchpad and even the orbital add in.
So will orbital really fail because of this launchpad or is there more to it, like the new security countermeasures for (against?) running timemachine on smb shares?

I have the same exact boolean 1 pop-up error, and then wrong password problem!

-Macbook Air running Lion.
We renamed the (apple) "Launchpad" to "Mac Launchpad" and let Microsoft Launchpad install normally.

Since I let Microsoft keep the default name of "Launchpad" why would I have a problem?

It sounds like something else behinds the scenes is broken and we need to wait for the mystery Microsoft to patch it. I remember reading something about it not being a priority because hardly anyone wants/needs it. (that's BS!, why have it at all then period)

What a shame, I was excited to finally allow my roommate to have full time machine capability.

Standing by,

Have managed to get the add-in installed (and the Mac launchpad updated) under Mac OS X Lion. However, it is unable to either 1.) pass the credentials to the WHS 2011 box or 2.) mount the file share within OS X. It's especially odd considering I am able to mount my //server/timemachine file share in OS X (outside of this add-in) without any issue. Orbital Backup keeps prompting me to Reconfigure? Time Machine within OS X, but fails with a CANCEL/OK prompt. Either option closes the Orbital Backup app within OS X. Clearly this is still a beta that shouldn't have been released yet.

EDIT: Seems to be related to an AFP protocol change in Apple's Lion OS. Would require perhaps an updated service in WHS 2011 to support. Not certain.

I too wonder why Orbital chose to release their backup add-in at this point, knowing that a sizable number of MACs have been upgraded to Lion.

My LaunchPad on the Mac doesn't have an "add-ins" option and I can't access Orbital's backup configuration. I'm not running Lion. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem as wheresjernow. I am running osx 10.6.8, installed the plug in from my windows machine, installed launchpad on my mac but no add ins option. I can open all of the WHS folders with my mac so it sees the server fine.

I've got a pretty limited understanding of the technical problems, but some appreciation for the commercial and logistical realities of getting the two titans to sing from the same digital hymn sheet.

I posted something on MS's WHS Forum (under username GiottoGG):
http://social.micros...2a-3c2d5c2c1b54
About 2 days following the release of the add-in about a dozen people have posted specifically about the compatibility issue. I have to think those who would bother to post would be a very small fraction of the total users affected. Let's hope someone comes up with a fix!

Add-ins appears in Launchpad! And I don't get a "could not connect" error -- note, I'm not using Lion...

1. I re-installed Launchpad using the name of my WHS2011 Home Server in place of an IP address when asked for "server address" -- the second startup of launchpad informed me of an update. See more details here: http://forum.wegotse...c/page__st__20.

2. Trying to use Orbital to connect to a server folder with spaces in the name failed (i..e I got a "could not connect" error if I used "Client Mac Backups" as the server folder name). I renamed the server folder to "MacBackups" and it works.

My first backup is underway.

Hope this helps you.

Has anyone figured this out?

I'm in the exact same situation.
