Hi,

I'm running WHS 2011 on an Acer 340 box, with upgraded internals. Basically its Asus P8H61-I with i3-2100T CPU. Now, I want to reduce energy consumption and basically run the system more efficiently.
At home I have another 3 computers. This is the way I want to configure the system:
  • It should be up and running Sunday 2AM - 4AM (not related WHS backup period).
  • If any of computers are turned on within the network, keep server turned on.
  • If system is accessed using WHS 2011 remote web access keep the server turned on.
  • Even if some computers are turned on, but server is idle, suspend the server or turn off some/all HDDs.
Please let me know how much of those is possible to configure with LigthsOut AddIn. If yes, what would be the way to configure?

Thank you,
Ruben

It should be up and running Sunday 2AM - 4AM (not related WHS backup period).

Possible with Lights-Out: create a calendar entry http://www.homeserve...dar_sub_tab.htm

If any of computers are turned on within the network, keep server turned on.

Possible with Lights-Out: install client add-in for wake-up and monitor clients for activity http://www.homeserve...ers_sub_tab.htm

If system is accessed using WHS 2011 remote web access keep the server turned on.

Possible with Lights-Out: Enable remote access monitoring http://www.homeserve..._monitoring.htm

Even if some computers are turned on, but server is idle, suspend the server or turn off some/all HDDs.

You can either remove these computers from monitoring or use the client tray app to suspend the server manually.

Thank you for explanation! I'd like to keep behavior automatic, and to not suspend/wake up manually.

I'd understand how it could work it system goes into sleep and wakes up. But can it be configures so that system shuts down at certain hours and turns back on whenever some of the clients gets turned on?

Yes config it say 10pm to shut down (and by shut down I mean sleep)) then config the clients to be monitored, Remember only the clients you configure will wake up server, you cannot say between 6-8 these clients are ok then between 9-12 those are ok.

Can I shut down system completely and make clients send WakeUpOnLan packets and turn on the server remotely?

Yes, that's possible with most modern hardware. You can run a quick test yourself. Download a command line wake-on-lan tool like http://gammadyne.com/cmdline.htm#wol. Shut your server down and try to wake from a client.

The Lights-Out client includes wake-on-lan functionality.

Can I schedule system power off/on items in calendar? Will the system turn on even when there are no clients around?

I also have some troubles with putting system to sleep. It immediately wakes up after a second. How can I diagnose and see which process, driver doesn't let my server to go to sleep?

Yes

Will the system turn on even when there are no clients around?

No, wake-up by calendar requires standby.

I also have some troubles with putting system to sleep. It immediately wakes up after a second. How can I diagnose and see which process, driver doesn't let my server to go to sleep?

What hardware are you using? First check your network card settings (and check what happens when you remove the LAN cable): http://www.homeserve...rements_nic.htm
Should you use an Acer H340 then you have to install the Light driver: http://forum.wegotse...t-sleep-solved/

It is an ex-H340 box with ASUS P8H61-I motherboard, i3-2100T CPU and 8GB ram. Have 4 HDDs connected.
Running DrivePool service for storage management.

Tinus are you sure if the server is shut down, it does not get "magic packet" so it can not be woken up by clients, only if server in a state of sleep, please correct me if I'm wrong

Sure, it does wake up from shutdown via WOL. But the question was "even when there are no clients around?".

Hi Tinus,

I'm using LightsOut and am very happy with it!

I just notice something weird. The system keeps waking up 5 times a day to perform backup, but I do not have any backup tasks defined. I turned off backups on all client machines and on the serve as well. However it wakes up and immediately goes back to sleep.

Please see up time diagram attached.

Thank you,
Ruben

Tinus, I've got some small troubles. I want to keep the server alive, whenever my TV is turned on as well. I've added TV into the list of devices (using IP and MAC) and enabled runtime monitoring to keep the server online. However, my server keeps going to sleep when clients get turned off, even though TV is turned on.

Is this a bug or I'm basically not configuring the system properly?

Thanks,
Ruben

Have you first globally enabled IP monitoring?
http://www.homeserve..._monitoring.htm

Then added the TV and enabled monitoring?
http://www.homeserve...configuring.htm

When you turn on your TV, does it show as online in Lights-Out?

I used to have IP monitoring disabled. I just enabled it, will try it out overnight.

Thank you!

If the system goes into a standby mode and IP device gets turned on afterwards, will the server get up?

Probably not. The device has to send a wake-on-lan packet to wake the server.
