What way do you guys stream your media online? I haven't found a whole lot of options, its the only thing still tying me to WHS.

Thanks!

I am using OSX server to stream locally - I rip DVDs and then play them using AppleTV or XBMC. I also convert some to MP4 for use on my iPad. I do not however stream them. I use either WebDAV server set up in Lion or an app called FileBrowser which lets me copy the MP4 to my iPad and play it without an internet connection. This works better for me because I travel abroad and often do not have good or cheap internet in the hotel nor on the airplane.

One question, is it possible for you to connect to your server via VPN and then use something like WebDav+ or FileBrowser to stream to your portable device? I have not tried this but it might work. Just a note if you try this, when setting up the VPN in Lion server, i had some issues where it was not properly opening the right ports on my Airport extreme. Took me a while to figure this out, but now the lion VPN works great.

Thanks for the reply! I setup Plex on my Lion server and have been extremely happy with it, It streams my media to all of my devices on and off my home network. What are you using for VPN? I have screen sharing setup on my server, and am using "Chicken of the VNC" to remote in, feels wonky though.

i am using the Lion Server app for VPN. It was pretty easy to turn on and set up. The only problem I had was that it was supposed to automatically open the correct ports on my Airport Extreme but did not do it. I had to go in and set those up manually. It works quite well although I notice sometimes the first connection attempt fails (not sure why, but the second connection attempt from outside works every time). I will be traveling internationally in a week or two and will see how well it works from other countries such as China.

Good to hear Plex is working for you. I installed Serviio to stream videos to my DLNA compliant TV and that works really well too. My $300 Lion Server build can be backing up one computer, stream a full dvd to my AppleTV (I use firecore on a Jailbroken AppleTV2 and it works great) an stream another dvd via Serviio to a second Sony TV in the bedroom. All this without missing a beat.

Have you tried www.airplayit.com . There's a multi platform bit software for the machine with your videos on, then an app for the iPhone and another for the iPad. Many formats can be played via streaming, you can download them to the device instead if required. You'll need something reasonably quick to run the server side as its transcoding the video on the fly and the portable device buffers the video.

I put it on a HP Data Vault 510 and it worked fine, except I could make it run as a service.
