I’m new to WHS2011 and trying to set up in my home. I currently have connected to the home network, 3 desktop PC’s 2 Laptop PC’s and a Sony Playstation 3 and an HP server. I have until now had ITunes installed on 1 laptop and use this to connect to a iphone and a couple of iPods.
So now I have WHS I was hoping to just have 1 source of music and podcasts this being the server. This I could open any of the computers and they would have my music and podcast library so I could sync to the iphone and iPods, plus play music on any computer. I was also particularly hoping to be able to stream this to the PS3 as this is connected to my main music system, rather than having to plug a iPod into this.
I seem to be running into some problems though so any guidance would be appreciated :
Firstly the PS3 doesn’t seem to recognise music saved with iTunes, (this currently being saved on a pc rather than the server), the only way I can see the music is to copy a single track from iTunes library and paste into Windows media format (be this on the server or on the PC) so does this mean every time I load an album into ITunes I need to make a 2nd copy into Windows media player ?
Secondly when I share a directory on one computer with another all the music appears within both iTunes directories built in the 2nd PC (that does not have the music installed) its just a list and not divided into Albums or Podcasts as per the source iTunes.
I haven’t even attempted to try and install ITunes on the Server which I will need to do in order to achieve my ultimate solution, is this possible. I have looked at iTunes server instructions but this seems not to work when you get to iTunes 10.
Am I trying to achieve something that is not achievable seems quite simple to me all music and podcast saved on server and each individual device attached to the server uses this data as a source

I was wondering about a lot of these same things. Part of the reason for having whs is centralization. I can get my PS3 to see all the files on my whs box now, but I had to (naturally) turn on media sharing in the dashboard/server settings. So that all works.
I'm wondering if 1) Install iTunes on the server and have it run automagically so I can stream to my speakers and 2) what it will buy me over WMS.I don't think WMS will allow me to use Airplay and I've not checked to see if there's some plug in or other way of doing that. I suppose I could run iTunes on a PC, have it see the directory on the server containing the music and stream that way, but there's a lot of moving of files in that case - from server to pc to router to extender to speakers. Lots of points to fail.
That said, I see lots of mentions of installing iTunes on whs. So what does (and if only airplay, that's a good enough reason for me) it buy us? And what's the performance hit leaving it running?

Hi ho,
Not a specific reply to your questions, but I thought I'd add how iTunes is working for us so far...
One of the main reasons for building the WHS 2011 system at my house was to run iTunes and keep all our digital music in one place. I haven't gotten everything set up yet, but the pieces in place so far seem to be playing together nicely.
To get it installed, I basically followed the instructions for installation at the iHomeServer add-in site: http://www.bizmodell...unes_Setup.aspx which helped me ensure I got the 64bit version of iTunes, as well as to remember to install Quicktime. I didn't pony up for iHomeServer, even though it sounds like a very useful bit of kit. My server isn't headless, and it shares a KVM switch with another PC in my office so starting iTunes whenever I need to re-start the server isn't a big hassle.
The iTunes on the server is set up as the source for the Logitech Media Server app, which let's us use the Logitech SqueezeBox Classic to play any of our iTunes library through the home entertainment system. We don't have a PS3, so I can't offer any advice there. I've got the iTunes install configured for Home Sharing, and the Media Folder location is set to the Server Folders\Music share. This allows a few things to happen:
When the lovely bride wants to listen to music with her iPad and she's at home, she uses the Music app to just open the shared library on the server and play whatever she wants. She still has a few albums copied to the iPad for when she's at work and wants to listen to something there, otherwise all the music is stored on WHS (which saves a lot of file space on the iPad). We also use iTunes on the server to back-up her iPad, which means the apps and data from the iPad are getting backed up with the rest of the PCs and server each night through the WHS back-up plan.
She's also got a little iPod shuffle, so we use the iTunes on WHS to create and arrange playlists and such to synch the iPod. It's very convenient to just leave the shuffle plugged into the server and charge over night as needed.
I've also got issues with organization (I've got CDO, it's like OCD, but the letters are in the correct alphabetical order), so I'm happy to just have one set of music files to deal with organizing album art and meta tags on, rather than having a bunch of music in different libraries on different systems (which we used to have before I moved it all to WHS).
The part I haven't set up yet is my PC. It's currently an old desktop limping along with WinXP, Rather than try and install iTunes on it and use the shared library, I decided to skip it and wait to deal with that until I upgrade to a new box with Win7. In the mean time, I connect to the WHS system through the web browser, then use the Silverlight music player to listen to tunes while posting here or writing code. I'm rather surprised by how well it works (I have yet to try it from outside the house, so who knows, really), and may never install iTunes at this rate. I'll likely try the new WMP when I get Win7 just to see how it is.
Bottom line, the iTunes install was painless. I added a Virtual Audio Cable because the N40L doesn't have a soundcard, but that was no big deal. If running a headless system, iHomeServer makes a lot of sense as an add-in. As far as I can tell, having iTunes running has no affect on using the Media Sharing service - I do however do all of my meta tag editing and organizational work from within iTunes, if that makes any difference.
Hope that helps,
-Jeff K.

I purchased an AppleTV and in the process of moving my itunes library etc to WHS. My hope is that I can wifi sync/backup ipad(s) and iphone with WHS and then steam all media to AppleTV, iPad(s), WMP, etc. I have approximately 80 DVD library on my WHS that was previously imported with MyMovies and have alot of TV DVDs that I will be adding as well. I will report back on challenges with tagging, syncing as I progress
