Hi everyone,

Doesn't have to be an add-in I guess, maybe even a service, but I was wondering if anyone has a method to help organize their music on WHS 2011? I'd love something that helps organize as well as metatag and rename files properly - would be awesome to do so from an external source.

I've seen a few programs out there but wondered if anyone had suggestions. I tried My Movies for films but I kept getting all kinds of SQL Server Errors, but something of that same type would be interesting.

Thanks!

Hi ho, Vas

If you find such a thing, shout it from the rooftops! If anyone reading this is an add-in dev, this would be a "killer app" for WHS2011, right up there with Drive Extender replacements and Lights Out.

I've spent the last 2 days beating on metatags with a rock - Most of the stuff you can get right with iTunes, then there's more stuff you need to tweak from within WMP12, then over to the MediaStreaminAdmin folder to rename some database files so those will refresh, then another pass with WMP11 from an XP client to get some of the proper album art embedded in the files too. What a horror show. WMP12 looks perfect in WHS2011, iTunes looks right too... there's just one @!$#% album that refuses to update artwork in Remote Web Access media streaming.

Ok, I'm ranting...

You may want to look at MP3tag, which is a freebie that's supposed to work well. I haven't tried it, since I've got no idea what (if anything) it'll do for the Remote Web Access interface. There's also WMP Tag Plus, which provides more options for working with video formats.

Good luck with this one, Vas!

Not an add-in, but I use MediaMonkey (running on a client PC) for managing my music library and its metadata on my WHS 2011

Thanks everyone. I figured no add-on but hopefully someone will see the utility of one.

I'll definitely check this out. Anyone seen this one called bliss? Looks interesting but people seem to have other ones that work well for them that may be better to try.

You guys were right that Mediamonkey is great for organizing the music. On first use though, the tagging and renaming of songs isn't its strengths, so I'm going to check out that tag and rename as well. Tagscanner and Mp3nity also has good reviews for tagging and renaming so I'll check those out as well. Thank you folks again.

Media Monkey: For organizing large music collections (currently 70,000 songs)
Tag & Rename: For retagging anything that wasn't done correctly
dbPowerAmp: For ripping and file conversion
Squeezebox & Transporter: For music playback
iPeng: For wifi iphone control

It would be nice if there were one program, but each program has it's strengths.

John,

I definitely agree it would be nice. I love your list and will try them all.

I have to be honest - tried Tag & Rename, wasn't impressed. It appears to be a paid program, which is fine, but it kept locking up on two different systems. One of the systems is a high-end gaming computer which really shouldn't be having resource issues.

Someone recommended a prog called MP3nity. The name is kind of dumb but it is very easy to use and free. I think I'll stick with that one. Very good naming system and automatically assigns to other folders as needed. Has a basic cd ripper too that does the naming, tagging etc. Sorry about not being a Tag and Rename fan, as it looks like my dumbarse can't seem to get it working right.

Mediamonkey still money, thanks for that.

Interesting - never had it lock up for me. When first run looking at a network share there is a delay whilst it reads the share, and if you have a large collection it takes a little time.

I have used MP3Tag for many years and am well pleased with it, as far as it goes.
