I have an HP Smartmedia 487 server. I am getting errors that one of my drives is starting to fail. So I backed up all of my files, and am trying to add another drive. I purchased a 1 TB WD Caviar Black Drive that has 32 MB of Cache. I placed a jumper on pins 7&8. I have placed the drive into an open slot on my server. The system recognizes it, but when I go to the console and add it, it gos through the formatting process fine, then when it says "Adding Hard Drive" it locks up my server. I can no longer connect to it, the only way I can get a response is to power it down and power it back up.
Now I am getting a message that says my trial of Home server is over. Not sure what that means.
I have been working on this for over a week and I really have not had any luck getting and help, so any help would be appreciated.
Am I doing something wrong?
Do I need to just remove the bad drive and then try to add the good drive?
Do I need to do an entire system reset?

75 views and not a single person has an idea how to help me. I guess, I will try to remove the bad drive and see if I can then add the new drive.
I don't even have an idea if the drive I have can be added, but since there is virtually nobody on this board willing to provide any feedback, I will have to go with a guess.

Did you activate your copy of WHS? That's about the only thing I can think of that would cause a trial message to appear.
Is your drive SATA?
Is your drive SATA?

First off, THANK YOU for responding!!!
Yes, I activated my WHS. I have been running it for years. Yes, my Drive is a SATA drive. My best guess if that my data drive is failing. I tried to Remove the Data drive, but there is not enough room on on my system drive to remove it properly.
My plan is to make sure I have copied all of my files off of my server (I use it to store all of my pictures and music and do back-ups of all my machines)
I am then going to pull out the data drive and do a hard system reset. I know this will erase everything, but i have posted for help on 3 different boards and yours is the only response I have gotten in 3 weeks, I am getting desperate. My hope is that my server will reset and with the bad drive out I will be able to stay connected and add the new drive.
