magicJack (http://www.magicjack.com) works on Windows Home Server. I could not complete the registration process on WHS but after I completed the registration on an XP machine, magicJack came right up when plugged into my WHS. Only down side is I couldn't get it to run as a service so you have stay logged in to the WHS for it to work. Not bad, though, as WHS is not a supported platform for this product.
Background: magicJack is a USB voice-over-IP product that allows unlimited calling to US and Canada from any phone plugged into it. The product works but has some drawbacks, like almost no support and no un-install program (can be uninstalled manually).

Doesn't skype allready do that too? (Free calls)
Yes, but Skype calls to non-Skype phones costs per minute and Skype doesn't use a 'regular' phone. magicJack costs $40USD for the device, then $20USD per year for unlimited calling. With a multi-handset cordless phone setup you can easily convert your entire home phone system to magicJack.

Hey All,
I’m new to windows home server , I just got my hp mediasmart server ex470 on ebay, thanks to 20% off from live.com/cashback. Paid a couple dollars more than if I got it at office whatever for $299. The timing was off. My quest is to make my ex470 run magicjack full time while the server is on, and view ip cameras as well. I haven’t got to the cameras yet though.
I wanted to share how I got magicjack to run today with the help of the many home server forums out there. When I plug the magicjack into a usb port on the server it will load, but I get an error messasge saying “no audio devices found†. Went to the control panel to check sounds and audio devices properties and found Microsoft RDP audio driver as the default with no option to change it. I had read about a usb sound card, so I got one on ebay for $4.00, it was delivered today. Plugged it in and the server sees it, but I still can’t change the default audio device in control panel to the usb audio device. Now of course I’ve been logging into the ex470 by opening Remote Desktop Connection on the start menu of XP pro.
Then I found this on another forum:
“To get Server 2003 to play audio at the machine while logged in remotely you have to specify Remote Desktop Connection to leave sound at server, and you have to login to the server with the /console option enabled. You can edit the Remote Desktop Connection short cut to read like this:
%SystemRoot%\System32\mstsc.exe /console
Then you'll be able to hear audio at the server.
Brianâ€
I didn’t really want to hear sound; I just wanted the usb audio device to be recognized.
This solved the problem.
Start--> Run--> %SystemRoot%\System32\mstsc.exe /console
Click options --> Local Resources, and choose “Leave at remote computer†under Remote computer sound. Add your password and log in. When I logged in magicjack loaded without the error and the usb audio device was my default device.
If you log off though magicjack will stop, close remote desktop session with the x at the top of the remote desktop screen.

its kind of inconvienient to have to leave remote desktop up to run magic jack. So I was thinking how bout use virtual server, install windows xp and run it off the xp os. but my question is would the xp detect the magic jack?
Edit: Virtual server does detect usb devices. VMware server can be used on WHS?

All you have to do to run MJ in the background is run it as a scheduled task and set the startup to "when the computer starts"
I have been doing this with MJ as well as eye-fi software and it works like a charm.
go to run, tasks, right click create new. Put this in the run line
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJackLoader.exe"
enter you username and password below so it has the authority to run and bam, it works. Reboot your WHS, wait for all the activity to die down and your phone will be online. If you need to tweak the audio or something you can disable the task and log on locally make the changes you need, then re enable the task and reboot again. If you log on when MJ is already running as a task, it tries to load again, then you get an error that says its already running and you can just cancel. Been working fine for me for months.

It sure would be great if someone wrote an addin to install and run MagicJack on the HP 470. A lot of us, including myself, bought the home server to keep things as simple as possible.

BPost,
I wanted to thank you for your task method of installation. I had my installation working on my WHS for a week, then a reboot came on the system today and I lost the phone. I looked high and low on the web and tried several solutions, yours was the only one that worked.
Thank you for the tip and I wanted to let you know it worked out great.
Big Thanks!

any service installer method worked for me--I did notice after it was up and running that if you log in to WHS remotely while running magic jack as a service--magic jack tries to open again --just reboot WHS after finishing your remote session--

Well after reading and reading I finally was able to get MJ to work on my HP WHS machine. it appeared that I needed this line %systemroot%\system32\mstsc.exe /admin because I have SP3 on my xp machine. /console does not work.
I also used the Anyservice plugin and after rebooting everything worked. Naturally MJ does not show since its running as a service. But it works. The above command line was not mine obviously. I just thought I would share it for those people who are running XP with Service Pack 3. Thanx also to all in this thread you got me started and I didn't give up :)

Thats weird. To use the admin/console session, it should be /console for XP, and /admin for Vista/Win7.

Two words of caution: 1) ebay. 2) the author seems to not use any actually quoted material.
Doing some digging, it seems like that ebay post is copied from a few blogs. All dated april 2008, for the most part. Though considering the alarmist nature bloggers like to have.... I would take this story with a grain of salt. (like all things on the internet). If it does happen to be true, well, lets hope it isn't.

I was using the scheduled task that runs on startup as mentioned earlier. I was having mixed results, then I came across this that to me has the best results.

Here's how to prevent MJ from running when you RDP into the WHS:
1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
2. Expand User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then expand System.
3. Double-click the Turn off Autoplay policy.
4. Select Disabled, click Apply, and then click OK.

It works for me.
EDIT: NO IT DOESN'T. Sorry.
EDIT: Yes it does. B) It seems not to work the first time I RDP after a WHS restart, but it works for subsequent RDPs. Anyway, give it a try. It doesn't hurt anything.
