I got my installation of Webguide up and running over the weekend - but was a little frustrated at the limited codec support provuded by using the PowerDVD (version 8 as the version on CNet Downloads has been updated).

Has anyone found an alternative codec which both works with Webguide and provides additional codec support beyond the standard wmv and MPEG?

I will explore this myself, but would be grateful for any shortcut info anyone may have already!

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I had the same problem as you some months ago with Webguide Iscoured google for Codecs but in the end I "bit the Bullet" gave up on webguide and changed to ORB v2 its free and it works, I live in the UK and watch films streamed from my server whilst travelling ( most of it on the west coast of the USA), however I do have 1meg (upload) 2 Meg (download) broadband connection no stuttering at all.

Hi Brian - thanks for the response.

I personally prefer the idea of managing my media and access to it internally, rather than relying on a 3rd party, which was why I had gone down the Webguide route. However - I am in the process of exploring Orb as a solution for both internal (via Xbox360) and external use, with some help from GaMeR to get support for HD content.

Unfortunately I am limited to a fairly weedy upload speed, so am unconvinced as to how functional any streaming solution is going to be - but I am keen to experminet with it. In reality I may only use it for audio streaming whilst I am at work, rather than for video and movie playback (although the option would be great).

Cheers,

Paul.

Quick update - I have now managed to get Webguide streaming other encoded formats, although not consistently accross all of my files.

Keep getting client side errors - so I need to poke around under the hood to see if there is a common theme to the problems.

Cheers,

Paul.

Another update on the codec front.

After some experimentation and tweaking - I now have all normal formats/codecs streaming successfully (including to WMP) using FFDShow .

For reference I have tested with:

DivX
XViD
WMV

I am still to test with MKV's which are encoded with H.264 and with DVD/MPEG2 content - but I won't be too frustrated if they are the only stumbling block.

I am having the same problems while trying to stream my Divx movies. What tweaks did you do to get them working?

Thanks for the Help.

Hi jswig1976,

Apologies for not posting the info up sooner.

I basically just installed the FFDShow - then tweaked the decoder options until I got the desired effect. You just need to reboot after installing and select the codec from the dropdown list in the Webguide configuratiuon (you may also need to restart the Webguide Transcode service - or just reboot your server again).

I've attached my reg dump of the settings for you to try out and as per my above post - XViD/DiVX and WMV playback is working. As do mkv files encoded with H.264. However I still cannot get DVD/MPEG2 playback to work correctly.

Let me know if you are still having issues.

Cheers.
