I would like to add a TV card to my WHS box. Which is the best card for that? Would any card work, or do I need to search for server03 compatible drivers for it first?
I am running and older IBM Intellistation Z Pro with dual xeon 2.8's and 3 gig of ram. It has all PCI slots.
I am on cable, but do not want to put a set box there for HD (My server is in the mechanical room at the hub of the network) I might want to get an HD OTA antenna and have a cable connection as well.
Thanks

Basically you will have to either trail and error or search for Server 2003 drivers. I personally have two Hauppage HVR-1600's that work fine in my server (but aren't there, in my media center)
However, you will need to install a program or such to be able to record TV on the server. Something like SageTV.

Thanks.
I think I read that of you in another forum after I posted this. Currently i do not run Media Center on WHS, I have it on my other desktop. I thought it would be nice to have them centrally located and stream recorded TV to my tv's.
I will check those out.
Thanks

yeah, unfortunately Media center doesn't support reading files from UNC paths (aka network shares). Nor will MCE 2005 install on WHS properly.
Though, there is one program that is looking promising, MediaPortal.

Drashna,
I had a quick look at mediaportal, but indeed this looks very promissing! Have you ever tried using it on a WHS system? I haven't got a test system, so I am not to happy in testing it... (current system is already producing errors all the time...). How would you access it though... Hook up your tv to your WHS? It would be great if they would create an interface through the connector where you could start recording control the tuners etc etc and send just the mediaportal interface of one of the video outs...
I will keep tracking the mediaportal software!

I haven't tested this out yet, but may be able to soon.
There is a TV Server version and and a Normal/Client version, and theoretically, it will serve the recorded TV and Live TV from the server.
Hopefully, I'll be getting a spare tuner card to borrow and be able to test things out

I saw indeed the TV-server part. I will try to get my hands on a tv-tuner card myself as well and try it out. It looks interesting enough! And I am looking into a WHS-DVR solution for a while now and this just might be it!
Only thing is that I have to find a way to play my recorded content to my TV without a media extender or htpc...
I will get a DVR in the upcoming months in combination with a glass fiber internet connection, curious if that one will work/can communicate with my WHS...

Bump
So what is the latest news on this top? What is the current best TV tuner for WHS and the best way to share it to other PCs for playback?

MediaPortal is a great free program.
I currently have MediaPortal Server install on my EX485 with TV Tunner HVR-1950. On my three laptops and my desktop I have MediaPortal Client installed.
I currently using MediaPortal to stream live TV and recorded TV shows from my server to my three laptops and desktop.
In addition, I use the following plug-ins with MediaPortal: 'Moving Pictures', 'MP-TvSeries' and "AnimePlugin2" to organize, tag, and stream my DVD's, TV Series, and Animes from my server to my laptops and desktop.

I can also testify for MediaPortal. It's a very active (yet in fact slow progressing) project.
You can just install the TV-Server part on your WHS and the clients wherever.
Since I have most of my TV cards (inc. DVB-S which is not simple to move to another room) on my HTPC, I don't use this solution (I use MP locally), but many people do.
AFAIK TV-Server is not (yet) a uPnP/DLNA type streaming server (again: AFAIK, CMIAW).

Might be worth considering a HD Homerun, as its dual tuners are available to any machine on your network - not just the WHS. Gives you more flexibility.
