I know twonky is probably one of the best means of media streaming/sharing out there but from what ive seen, the only add-in for twonky is on HP. Is there anything else out there just as good with add-in capability for "home build" WHS boxes?

Ive looked over the forums but havent really seen something that is jumping out to me about this subject.

thanks for any insight in advance!

Well Twonkey are working on a standard WHS version but news about it has gone cold. It's a shame becuase it is one if not the best solution out there.

There are reports on the forums there that a WHS version is coming. New date is sep 7. There were a few previous dates but during release testing they found problems that had to be fixed. Good on them for testing before release, saves us all a lot of hassles.
Search for WHS in the Twonky Server section of the Twonky forum site.

If you have a license for twonky, you can download version 4.4.11, which does not run as add-in, but can be very simply installed (eg through RDP). Control of the Twonky service is through the web page, port 9000:

//server:9000

This version accepts all Twonky 4 and twonky 5 license keys.
Runs on my WHS machine for quite a while now, very stable and reliable.

I've tried to install the new "add-in" version and it's simply not working right. I was running an older build of v.5 and it was working fine (using the web configuration). Uninstalled it and installed the add-in, it seemed to install fine, and I can still access the Twonky using the web ... but because all changes are now locked to the add-in, I can't configure it.

What's happening is that the tab gives me an error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." When I go to Settings/TwonkyMedia, the panel on the right is completely blank.

I have posted on TwonkyForum but was wondering if anyone here might have an idea.

Does anyone know the benefit of the 5.1 version for WHS compared to the 4.4.11 version? Controlling the parameters through the Add-in console is not sufficient. The previous web-interface was pretty good. Can you still create your own menu structure with this 5.x version?

Since I can't install the add-in (correction ... get it working), I can't tell you what's controllable by the add-in.

However, from RDC you can access the config pages in the browser or by directly editing the .ini file and it looks as configurable as 5.1 is generally.

I would love to install this add-in and help but I'm afraid of moving from my 4.4 that hp has kindly provided. I have heard several tales of unreliability. So I'll pass until another build is released, begs the question what were they doing testing all that time?

I have had the 5.1 add-in on my WHS. The only advantage (if you really could call it like that) is that you don't have to RDP into WHS, but for most of us, that's not a problem. Most of the functionality the 5 version has on a PC is not available. Most serious issue, is that there's no easy way to create/control the menus on your audio device, Twonky is streaming to. This was a feature of the 4.4.11.

My advise: Forget about the WHS add-in, and just install version 4.4.11. It is better, more stable, and has more features than 5.1

Even if you have a license for the 5.x version, for example if you happen to buy an audio device which comes with a Twonky license (like my Philips NP2900), you really should use 4.4.11. It will accept 4.x and 5.x license keys.

Does Twonky purely stream or does it transcode too?

Actually it is supposed to be be able to transcode. But there is no documentation and the threads I have seen rarely seem to come to a successful conclusion. People have successfully got it to work though ...

I personally haven't get it to work (all I want to do is to transcode WMA to MP3 for my Samsung TV) - I'm working on it though, and it I ever get it to go I will post.

Twonky does not transcode. Strictly a media server.
