Create a USB Recovery Key

The USB Recovery Key is essential to restoring a file or system following a lost file or client PC.

What is a USB Recovery Key?
  • The USB Recovery Key is used to jump start your client pc and point it to a backup stored on your WHS.
What will you need?
  • WHS 2011
  • Client PC with connector software installed
  • 512MB USB Flash Drive
Some references say you must create the USB recovery key with the system you wish to recover, but this is not the case. I create my key on a Win7 pro system and then tested the key on a purpose built test system which had WinXPpro installed.

Log on to the Windows Home Server Dashboard and Select Computers and Backup tab.

Select the Additional Client Computer Backup Tasks link on the right side of the screen.

Select the Tools tab, then Select Create Key, and OK.

Insert a 512MB or bigger USB flash drive into the server and then click next to launch the Computer Recovery Key wizard.

Now select the USB flash drive and check the box – Note all the data on the flash drive will be erased and select Next.

This will take a few minutes to complete the usb recovery key, so be patient.

When the Recovery Key wizard finishes, keep it in a safe place. I have mine attached to the key that locks the Disk Drive Door on my HP MicroServer.

To use the Recovery Key you will need to configure the client pc to boot from a USB drive. Plug the Recovery Key into your troubled pc and turn it on. Once it boots, follow the on screen prompts.
