WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
WHS 2011 connected W7 Desktop or Laptop computer(s)
WHS 2011 with WSUS installed
Your WHS Computer Name
Difficulty: Advanced – Install at your own risk, WGS and I except no responsibility if you brick your home server or your home computer.
Our Windows computers normally look to Microsoft's Update servers for their update needs. Now, we can use our WHS to update all our Windows systems automatically.
Perform this step on all your computers you want to update from your WHS. When you launch the 'Windows Update' application, your computer connects to Microsoft's update servers. Click on the Start Orb and open Windows Update in the Administrative folder. Look at the middle of the dialog box and note that MS provides your updates.

Close the 'Update Windows' window if you opened it. Now let's open the Group Policy Editor, Click on the Start Orb and type 'gpedit.msc'. (If your version of Windows does not include Group Policy Editor, jump down to 'Alternate Procedure' section.) Now, in the left pane open on Computer Configuration, open Administrative Templates, open Windows Components, and open Windows Update folder. Now double click the 'Specify Intranet Microsoft update service location' in the right pane.

Select the 'Enabled' radio button. And put a description of what this will do in the Comment box. Now, Enter 'http://SERVERNAME:8530' for both the 'Set the intranet update service for detecting updates:' and 'Set the intranet statistics server:' Options. Click OK.

Enable any additional settings you would like to apply. When finished close the GP editor.

If you open your Windows Update application now, you will notice it is now 'Managed by your system administrator'. Also, you can still update directly from Microsoft by clicking on the 'Check online for updates option'.

ALTERNATE PROCEDURE
You do not need to perform the following steps if you used the Group Policy Editor.
If your version of Windows does not support Group Policy Edit, you can still connect to your WSUS server. In order to point your computer to the WSUS you will need to edit your registry.
Before you edit your registry, BACK IT UP!
To start click the start orb and select 'Run'. Now enter 'regedit' and enter.
Navigate to:
'HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdate'
Now you need to create two new 'String Values' in this key:
'WUServer' (Do not include quotes)
'WUStatusServer' (Do not include quotes)
Click on the 'Edit' drop down on the menu bar, and click on 'New' and click on 'StringValue'. Now Enter WUServer and enter. And repeat for WUStatusServer.

Once the String Values are created, right-click on each one, select modify and enter the following string value and click OK.
'http://SERVERNAME:8530' (Do not include quotes)
SERVERNAME = your Server's name (i.e. frankenserver)

When your finished it should look like this.

Now Click on File and Exit your work.
Repeat this process on all your home computers.
