As I have a custom made WHS I also wanted to have an icon in My Computer (and the Desktop) for my HomeServer. I started with the manual installation of Jesse Michael Torres and made a whole program around it. With the icon library of Gustavo Franco it becomes possible to select icons inside an .exe, .dll or .icl. It also contains an icon library with a couple of icons of home servers.

There is a version for x86 and x64 systems. I tested it myself on Windows Vista (x86) and Windows 7 (x64).

Downloads (version 1.0.0.7):

Update: The most recent version is 1.1.0.105 (see this post).

Of course there is still a wish list:
  • Support for multiple instances
  • Automatic installation together with the connector software
  • More icons of home servers in the library
  • Multi language support
  • Administrative installation support
  • Better installer (base on Wix)

The known issues at the moment are (will be solved in the next version):
  • When un-checking the 'Remote Desktop' feature, the next time you start up the 'Customize' window will throw an exception
  • The x64 version installer has the .NET Framework 3.5 as prerequisite instead of the .NET Framework 2.0

I hope other people can also benefit from this application.

Very nice work, Erik! Thanks for sharing it with us.

I recently rebuilt my machine, and I hadn't got around to adding my Home Server back manually. This saved me lots of time, and it looks great.

I would like to add something to the wish list. That is being able to run more than one instance of Homeservericon. This would be useful for those who have more than one server. Right now runing it a second time just gives you the option to repair or remove. Otherwise, a great program.

Very nice. Though this would be very nice to be installed automatically with the connector software. If you have the OEM Preinstallation Kit documentation, it explains how to do that. If you don't, let me know.

Feature Request: Can it be set up in the program to select "Explore" or "Open" for the context menu when opening the Home server?

"Explore" shows the folder list on the left of the window, where "Open" shows the default folder actions.

The feature that I request is relative to this image:

What do you mean with 'default folder actions'?

When I open my Home Server, I would like to see this window instead of seeing the folders listed on the left (when you select "explore")

I know that I can easily click the folder button to close the folder bar, but I'd rather be able to default to this view instead of the default Explore window as included with your app. (example below)

Ok, I will see what I can do. In Vista or in Windows 7 I can not get it working as you request (there is just no parameter for it). Maybe it is working differently in Windows XP. Does any of the command line parameters on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314853 does have the requested result?

Very nice tool, had no problem configuring it for my Scaleo Home Server. Thank you, Erik !!

Inevitably however, some feature requests !! (sorry about that ;-)

1. Ability to explore the server shares within the existing Explorer window (instead of launching a new window).
2. Any chance to configure such that the icon is shown only when the server is online ?

I have fixed some issues and implemented some new features into HomeServerIcon (version 1.1.0.105).

-Fixes:
  • The 'Windows Home Server Console' now also works on the Home Server itself
  • The pre-requisite of the x64 installation (changed from .NET 3.5 to .NET 2.0)
  • Exception when 'Remote Desktop' command was disabled and the application was started again

-Added / Changed:
  • Added support for multiple instances
  • Added an icon for Tranquil SQA-5H
  • Added an icon for Chenbro ES30068
  • Added an icon for Asus TS Mini SOHO Server
  • Added Home Page command
  • Added Wake Up command (on Windows 7 multiple targets are supported, on earlier operating systems only one)
  • Added dutch language (for application and shell context menu)
  • Moved over to installer based on Wix
  • A lot of internal changes / optimisations

There is a version for x86 and x64 systems. I tested it myself on Windows Vista (x86) and Windows 7 (x64).

Downloads (version 1.1.0.105):

I am not planning to implement other features because I want to start with something else (I also have to finish a microsoft exam).

I hope other people can also benefit from this application.

P.S. Do not ask me for new features as it works fine for me and I do not want to spend more time to this. If you experience a bug, please let me know, maybe I have some time left and can help you.
