sure, agreed
still a no go
what is the point of no real time scanning on a (normally) headless device?
you'll RDP on it every day to scan?

Hi all,
Does anyone have any recommendations for a free anti-virus product for WHS.
I normally use AVG free for my desktop PC's and have tried to install AVG on WHS but it isn't allowed under the licensing conditions and fails to install?
Any recommendations would be appreciated?
Cheers,
Tony

Sorry but to my knowledge there aren't any free AV/Security products that are certified for WHS
Having said that some people report that they have been able to use products such as Clamwin - you would be using them at your own risk. Remember WHS has unique features around the file system with Drive Extender so a product that is not designed for that could create issues

The link provided by the OP says for WHS and it is free. I may have to try it tonight when I get home. It would be nice to have a "free" solution, depending on features and how well it interacts with the system.

I did reply earlier but it ot lost in the server crash....
I merged two threads on this "free AV" topic and my reply was to the other thread - so lost context.
However it appears that this Bit Defender "WHS version" may not be ready for prime time as I'm yet to see anyone post that they've installed it and are using it...
With installation problems like this I'll be staying clear of it til it's got a bit more of a proven track record

Anyone actually manage to get the free version of Bitdefender installed? I am running WHS PP3 and the installer says it is incompatible with my version.

I can recommend CLAMWIN with one provision - if it finds a virus it does nothing except mail you a notification - then deal with the files individually it has reported by taking them off the server and onto a pc to scan in free version of avast.
My clamwin runs a realtime scan, however when scanning the drives - I run a daily one on the C drive, and aweekly on the D drive - (this one does take some time tho on 3Tb of data - I am looking at breaking that down to daily folder scans - again, if it finds a virus on either scan it just emails me and nothing else - I have had a fw false positives and when checking the reported files elsewhere I have found nothing untoward on any of them - I have one real infected file and it found and reported it - I removed it to a pc and ended up deleting it - the whs was fine as the file had not been accessed and so the virus had not gotten out of a compressed file and did not infect the server.

I've been using Clamwin on WHS for a couple of years and am more than happy with it.
I run it as a service.
I must have mine set differentoy to the previous poster because if mine finds an infected file it renames it and quaratiunes it. I am alerted by the post scanning message.
There is a thread on the forum somewhere that tells you some exclusions that speed up the scanning.
There is also another thread that suggetse an addin for WHS may be written for Clamwin.

Any thoughts on Microsoft Security Essentials?
What is there to think about. It has been discussed before and will not install on a Server OS like WHS. Also, it would not be programmed to deal with the storage arrangements that WHS uses, thus presenting a risk to your data.

How about not using AV? I don't use AV. My system is not allowed to dial our unless going for updates. It doesn't handle mail, the browser is not used (except for MS updates). Anything uploaded to it comes from a client already running AV and the whole network sits behind a Smoothwall box that scans all traffic in and out for viruses and trojans.
No problems here...occasionally I will use a client to scan shared folders, but with a huge amount of data stored on my box that is very time consuming.
