Just seeing the number of HP MediaSmart Server owners who are immediatley upgrading memory makes me think that if someone from HP should drop by they should take note!
HP MediaSmart Server memory upgrade Have you upgraded system memory?

Sadly, I don't seem to be able to vote to say that I haven't upgraded the memory - it looks like I need to vote in all three polls, but the second and third aren't really relevant if I haven't upgraded.

Hi eepyaich. Thanks for the feedback, I have amended the poll to take account of those who have not installed a memory upgrade. Hope you will vote.

My vote has now been counted!
FWIW - I'm not sure I'm necessarily "happy with no memory upgrade". I just haven't done one yet (partly pending the results of the poll).

Upgraded the next day after I took delivery. The difference in response speed from the server (especially if you are mstsc in) is dramatic. Faster network tx speeds also. Remember to up the virtual memory too! Very happy.

Hi All,
I just went through a hairy half hour doing the memory upgrade; those screws are tiny. But everything popped up and I am now showing 1.96 of RAM. QUESTION: Some of the posts suggest that you change the virtual memory also. What should that be set to; and how do you set it. Should the paging space (now at 720 I think) also be changed?
Thanks,
John

typically you should set the virtual memory to be 1.5 times the amount of RAM installed.
Normally, you would set maximum & minimum values to be equal ie in your case 1.5 * 2Gb = 3072 for both max & initial.
The benefit of this is that if/when the page file grows in size, it doesn't become fragmented.
Oh, and it only needs to be set on one drive (no idea how WHS would treat a page file if it found it on a non system drive)
To set it :
remote console to the machine using termianl services (not home server console).
right click 'my computer', select 'properties'
select 'advanced'
select 'settings' from the performance area
select 'advanced'
select 'change'
ensure the 'C: [SYS]' volume is selected, and enter the values. Then press 'set'
Then 'ok' or 'close' to get back to the start. you may need to reboot your system after this change.
You will see a section at the bottom summarising the current sate, and recommended state.

Can you possibly summarize the steps you need to take to upgrade the RAM? I'd like to do it but I am not sure I know how to take the box apart, etc. I have built my own PC's with standard ATX motherboards/cases and so am pretty familiar with that form factor, but I have no such experience with the HP box. Thanks ...

Bob,
There is a How To already on this - http://www.myhomeser...com/?page_id=10
Good Luck. I'm not an HP user myself.

All the sites point to newegg, but can anyone point me to a cheap store in the UK which sells the correct 2gb stick?
Thanks
Matt

Here's one I liked better (more pictures and better descriptions): http://www.homeserverhacks.com/2007/12/upg...r-hp-ex470.html
HINT: Watch for those two little tiny screws just inside the front panel you WILL want the right jeweler's screwdriver AND you may need to Dremel or drill bit the head off if the tiny screw head fails you. It's happened to the best of us, so watch for it!
I'm not technically inclined, but I did it in 20 minutes (including drilling off one failed head). Performance drastically improved after the upgrade and updating the virtual memory setting (also available on the same web site above).

I completely sympathise about the screws! I did have the right screwdriver and I still managed to completely strip one of them. In the end, I used some small wire cutters as a pair of pliers (the wire cutters could bite into the sides of the screw so that I could turn it). I then had trouble trying to get the screw back in after I'd put in the new RAM and then lost it on the floor (at which point I felt "good riddance").

I was running mine for a month stock and did the upgrade yesterday to 2GB. What a difference it made, Webguide showed the biggest gains as it's really usefull now and quick. I stream my 200GB of music to my work computer and before the upgrade it took for every just to see the music but now it's nice a snappy and loads quick. Move around the console tabs and setting is much faster as well.
Well worth the $50 and 10 minutes of work to do, HP should really give the option of having a model with the memory upgraded already as it really makes the product shine.

Dear All,
Sitting here for an hour, as we probably all do, going round in circles trying to ensure I get the right 2gb memory.
Have looked at the Crucial site and the 470 is not listed. Mine is still sealed in the box so please do tell. Precisely what is my best match of memory and the best buy in the UK?
Thanks,
Mike.

From the http://www.homeserverhacks.com/2007/12/upg...r-hp-ex470.html link that stepped me through the process, I read abut the " Patriot 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)" memory. I searched for it on New Egg and found it here (SKU N82E16820220231): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220231
Not sure about the Crucial site, but if you can find memory that matches the specs exactly to the Patriot memory from New Egg, you should be golden.

Hello Happy HP MediaSmart users!
I recently put a post on here about upgrading the RAM in the EX475. I have had my HomeServer for just about a week and have been messing around with it alot. I noticed that after you have a few addins installed, the system can really grind to a halt. Especially if you want ot run antivirus, etc.
The question I posted was if to see if anyone knew if you could use PC5400 Ram as opposed to PC5300. I asked this because here in the UK, it is easier and cheaper to buy PC5400. Well, here's the answer!
YES!!!
I took a £25 gamble and bought 2GB of PC5400. I installed it in my Home Server to see what difference it made to general performance, especially with the addins installed (such as WebGuide, Antivirus and DU Meter to monitor bandwidth usage). As I said, I have messing around with my server for about a week and have noticed some glitches in the system. One of the most annoying things was that the functionality of pressing the power button and the server shutting itself down correctly had stopped working. This is a great feature if you don't want to have to fire up a remote session or another PC to shut the server down.
Anyway! Enough rambling. I installed the 2GB module and the whole process probably took about 5 minutes. I must be honest that at first I didn't really see much difference. HOWEVER....
I haven't really put much of my own data, movies, music etc on my home server yet so I decided to do a system restore to get it back to its original state. This process takes about an hour BUT it was sooooooooo worth it!
I can enphatically say that this was an EXCELLENT gamble. The server really does run better. As long as you setup the correct Page File settings as in the instructions from the wegotserved.co.uk "How To" guides. Also, I changed the system settings (Visual Performance)to "Adjust for better performance".
So if you are thinking about doing this and you're not sure if you can use PC5400 RAM, you can! It is definately well worth doing it too!

Just performed the memory upgrade (to 2GB) and it's already showing an increase in performance - much like I'd expect with any other OS - the console is nippier as is WebGuide. Well worth spending a few quid :)
