I have 2 Windows 7 PC's attached to my network, 1 over gigabit lan and the other over Wireless N. The PC on the wired lan takes about 2 hours to complete the initial backup. The PC on the wireless side is on it's 20th hour and still going. Am I doing something wrong? Is this normal?

Backup Taking Too Long Over Wireless Connection

That's normal. Wireless doesn't get anywhere near the same speed. Your best bet is wire the other PC if you can, and do the initial backup that way.

Hello...
I have a couple laptops that backup just fine using wireless G. The first is an XP with about 38 gig of stuff on it.
The other is a new Win 7 again using wireless G with about 40 Gig on it as well. Both take under two hours to
backup to WHS.
My router is a Linksys G/B SRX ver 2.
Interestingly enough I have wired Dell XP 420 with vista 64bit that is wired 100Mbps full duplex that is only
48% done after 24 hours. This has ~180 Gig of stuff on it. My other wired machines are fast though.

My whs backup was pretty quick wirelessly for 2 months or so. It then got slow even on incremental (which i assume is what is done after the intial backup) but now the backups whch took less than an hour take 8 hours. This is the same for all 4 laptop clients. All have n speed wireless cards. Am running a dell 4600 with intel pro/1000 gt and netgear 3700 router. We had a power outage possibly around the time this issue started but I can't be sure about that. Any suggestions? What was a simple easy backup solution is now a slow pain in the rear.

Suggest a chkdsk on all your drives.
It is taking too long on detecting clusters or the actual file transfer part?

The power outage may also have messed up the backup database on the server. Check the event logs on the server just to make sure it isn't reporting any issues.

Not exactly sure how to answer your question. Backups start and go into backup mode and does back up, it just takes 8 hours. This is on all client laptops. Although I am not a newbie to computers, I am relatively new to WHS. I have googled "how to run chkdsk on whs" and have come up with way too many confusing answers, including using WHS Toolkit, yet on ver 1.1 i see nothing about storage, chkdsk etc. as noted on 1 site, possibly referring to an older ver. BTW - the 2 drives in my server (wd 750 black and wd 2T green) both show as healthy. I have also looked at the evntvwr and the only errors have to do with sql for my movies add-in, some back up failures (due to my aborting a few backups because took so long), cqservice (which I read is not something affecting my backups). What errors should I be looking for and in which event vwr subject. Any advise or clear direction would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is there an alternative to chkdsk? Can i wipe my existing backup data and back up the 4 laptops again? If so, what should I do? Thanks.

As long as there are no disk or controller errors in the Event log, that sort of rules out hardware errors there. It is pretty easy to clear down the backups and start again. The process is described in the Tech Brief on Backups - link in the FAQ Wiki under WHS Documentation.

Below are the only disk/contoller related events I found and none existed before 3/1 or have repeated since 3/2. I have 2 sata hd's, a 750gb and a 2tb. I also have an external drive 1tb hooked up to server but not as server storage but for backup. WHS says it runs chkdsk in read only mode. Should I run chkdsk and if so, what is he easiest way to do it? I appreciate any assistance as after googling chkdsk and whs I am confused on how to do it, especially from a dos prompt.
As an alternative, should I just use the backup repair wizard and reback up everything?

There are no ide drives (unless this refers to the dvd drive). My server is an old dell 4600 which had sata ports on motherboard so I took out ide hard drives and put in 2 sata drives.

jut fyi...
After 3 days the back up on the Vista machine completed. After some t-shooting the network file xfer speeds were
only 2-3Mbps not just the WHS backup. Everything on my wired network is 100Mbps and the NIC was locked
to 100 full. Changing the NIC to auto now shows xfer speeds 95+bps. Go figure...usually you lock it to
100 full to avoid problems.

Well, my server has been doing an auto backup database cleanup for 7 days now so have been unable to run chkdsk since do not want to reboot server while cleanup processes. Waiting around to be able to do something to address this problem but cannot do anything until cleanup is done., As soon as I can do the chksdsk I will run the cmd file I was referred to run chkdsk and then reboot. In the meantime, my server chugs away doing the backup cleanup, making access to files slow and my sqeezecenter unable to play any server based content. All other contact with server and files is fine, other than being slow in some instances.
My (current) question is, does this sound like a backup database corruption issue since the only issues I am having are backup related -very long backups, even longer cleanup (I assume 7 days is not normal). Every monitor (Whs, whs diskmanagment, m computer etc) says storage is healthy, good, etc. SHould I stop waiting for database cleanup to finsih and instead just wipe my backup datae base (or use repair) and then rebackup the household laptops again and start fresh? At the very least I hope to wait out the database cleanup so I can do a backup backup to my external drive and then do a repair if chkdsk does not find or fix anything.
Thanks for the anticipated help.

Database cleanup seems rather excessive. If you're really not concerned about your backups, go ahead and clear the database.
Then run chkdsk to make sure all your disks are clean.
