Folder Duplication For Some But Not All Video Folders

Hi guys

I do not have a WHS yet, but I am trying to understand how it works - because I think this is just what I need :)

I see that you can enable folder duplication on your shared folders. I also see that there is a folder called "Videos" as default - and you can enable or disable folder duplication for that folder as well.

My question is: I have some home-videos that I recorded myself, and I would like to have these backup up, i.e. duplicated. I also have some dvd's that I have ripped from my original dvd collection, but I not need to have these duplicated (I could just rip them again if the harddisk failed). Is it possible to go into the default Videos folder and create a "home recordings" folder there and enable folder duplication on that, and then create another folder for movies and not enable duplication on that? - Or do I have to create two new shares - one for home recordings and one for movies? (of course I could reuse the Videos folder for one of the two, but you get what I mean :))

I would like to not have to create a new share, so that all my videos are inside the videos folder - if that is possible.

Thanks a lot in advance

If you want a duplicated folder and a non-duplicated folder, you'll need two shared folders.

For a couple of reasons, I don't use the Video shared folder at all. I create my own, more specific folders, such as Home Movies, DVD Movies, Blu-Ray Movies... it works well for me.

There shouldn't be any hesitence about creating shared folders. Its how you keep things organized on your server.

Ok, I guess that is fine then.
Are there no advantages in using the built-in folders? - I just assumed they would give some advantages, but as I think about it, I don't know what that should be :)

I personally use the built in folders. Personally, I find it makes reinstalls a lot easier.
My recommendation would be to use the built in videos folder for stuff you don't care about duplicating, and create a "home videos" folder for the stuff you do. That or dump the home videos into their own folder in the "Public" folder and enable duplication for that folder.

And it's all in how you use it. :)

Ahh, sweet. So you can set duplication for subfolders in the public folder - cool.

Thanks for your replies guys

What Drashna meant is enable duplication on the Public folder then put your home videos in a subfolder within Public. Public behaves the same as the other shares in that it's an all or nothing venture with duplication. However, by using Public for your home videos you don't have to create an additional/custom share. HTH.

Rycheck hit it on the nose.

The reason I recommended using the public folder, is that something like home movies is probably something you'd want to share with the whole family, and guessing that other stuff in the public folder, you'd want duplicated as well. While the Videos folder grows huge too fast to really warrant duplication (IMO).

Sorry for the confusion.

Ahh, I get what you mean now. I would have liked a bit more fleibility for selecting folders for duplication, but I guess this will do :)

Just ordered a HP STorageWorks X510 Data Vault... Really excited :)
