What about selectively removing backup files as described below. How does WHS handle the files left.

7/01/2011 Backup file. #10
6/10/2011 Backup file. #9 Delete
6/01/2011 Backup file. #8
5/31/2011 Backup file. #7 Delete
5/01/2011 Backup file. #6
4/20/2011 Backup file. #5 Delete
4/01/2011 Backup file. #4
3/20/2011 Backup file. #3 Delete
3/01/2011 Backup file. #2
2/01/2011 Backup file. #1

I don't know the proper way to cleanup backup files from the WHS backup drive or files backed up from my computers.

Is there a white paper on this?

Thanks

If you mark a backup for deletion, it is processed at the next Cleanup - normally a Sunday just after midnight. You can trigger a manual cleanup if required. As the backups comprise unique disk clusters with a map (in a database) to reconstitute both the file structure and disk image from them, only clusters that are no longer needed in any of the remaining backups will be removed. Hence a major cleanup may not really recover much space.

There are white papers on a number of the features unique to WHS v1 and you can find links in the Wiki section here. Go to the Wiki FAQ's and head for WHS Documentation.
