Mavericks Network Account Server - Join

5 posts in this topic

Working through the book, "Using OS X Mavericks Server at Home", and have run into an issue that I'm not certain how to correct.  In the section, "Enabling Network Account Login on Your Macs", there's a statement made, "In the dialog box which subsequently appears, enter your server's host name."

If I enter the host name, server.domain.com (replaced with my credentials), from one of my client computers, I get the response: Unable to add server. Connection failed to the directory server. (2100)"

The options in the drop down box, server.local and server.longnumber.members.btmm.icloud.com, neither provide a secure connection.

What am I missing?

A bit more information regarding this issue.

Mavericks Server is running and accessible from a laptop on the internal network, verified through browsing to the server address.  Also, verifies the server address through an iPhone with Wifi turned off.

The laptop that is able to access via the web cannot establish a connection through SysPrefs -> Users & Groups -> Login Options -> Join.  Question:  At this point, what is the value that we should enter into this box if the laptop is to be able to access the system from both inside the network and from outside the network?  My guess is that it should be servername.domain.com, right?

Any help with this at all would be invaluable!

Ron

Hi Ronkochanowski,

I had the same issue, but I found that a port was not open on my modem router (I accidentally placed it as block always). As soon as this was opened properly, I found it would work.

However, I now have an issue where Network Account Server is asking me for a user name and password (I suspect that this is the Directory Administrator account that was setup from Open Directory, as when I try to use my Administrator account, it say's authentication failed in red below the input boxes). When I place the Directory Admin user name and password in, a little working circle spins with the word 'binding' at the side of it. It then brings up an error box:

Unable to add server. Authentication server refused operation because the current credentials are not authorised for the requested operation (5101).

Now, the options are to put the details in again, but without the directory admin details, and click OK. This will accept everything, but I cannot log on to my server from my client computer.

Any help here would be great!

Ian

Hi Ronkochanowski, Hi Ian

I have the same issue as I am working through the book. Error message that there is no SSL available. What are the port settings you mentioned Ian?

Thanks!

Pete

Same issue here, Ron--"Connection failed to the directory server. (2100)." I've done some searching, and I'm thinking it might be a certificate issue.  In addition, in the Open Directory section of the server app, my directory does not appear in the list. These might be unrelated issues, but as of now, I am going on the premiss that they might be linked to a certificate issue. I'm going through the book as well, but it does seem to be almost silent on this problem. Anyway, I'll be interested to hear what you find. I'll be sure to post any of the info that I have found.

Tim

I'm slowly working through a home Mavericks server setup using the ebook.

I've got networks users with mobile accounts working well from a macbook client but when I try to login locally at the server, the users can login but another home directory is created for them on that Mac and is not syncing with the user folder set up via server.

Google hasn't been as helpful as usual.  Suggestions for debugging this?

      Thanks

      Hi,

I really looked forward to using the announced per-app VPN feature of Mavericks in order to keep my general web browsing using my regular network connection and get only specific applications to use a VPN tunnel.

This is being much harder to do than I thought though... After searching the web endlessly for information on the subject without much success, I found some cryptic information regarding configuration profile payloads used to define per-app VPN usage. This is said to only work for "managed apps" though. While it seems relatively straightforward to push apps to iOS devices and as such, making them "managed", it seems to be a whole lot more difficult for OS X computers, if at all possible.

It is important to note that I only bought Mavericks server for this purpose on my only Mac computer, which I figured would be used as a server and a client.

I bought your new ebook Using OS X Mavericks Server at Home hoping to find the answer to this, but the only part mentioning pushing apps to OS X managed devices is specific to enterprise and volume licensed software.

Is there at all a way to configure per-app VPN access on OS X computers?

      Thanks

    • Moved from WHS 2011 server to a Windows 10 home server.  Installed Lights Out on the windows 10 server and opened ports 7679 as advised. Installed on Windows 10 client from Lights Out Share and when the Join Server dialogue appears there is no servers in the list. Ive opened the ports on the client too. My router is an ASUS RT AC66U which as far as I am aware supports multicast. Even tried disabling windows fire wall on both machines. Been using this for years on my WHS v1 and WHS 2011 and really want it working on my Windows 10 server. Please help.
    • Log into the server with Remote Desktop ("mstsc") and change the DPI settings there. The reason that this is necessary, is that the dashboard is actually a Remote Desktop App, and actually runs on the server itself. That means you need to change the DPI settings on the server.
    • My lovely new Windows 10 laptop has a 4K display. I run display scaling at 200% for the usual desktop apps. WHS2011 dashboard seems to ignore this display scalilng though so its window and everything in it (including text and mouse pointer when inside the window) are really tiny. With RDP from Win10 I can simply set display scaling to 200% for the session. But I cannot see any way to do something similar for WHS Dashboard.
Have I missed something? What is the best way to deal with this? Is there a registry setting that will force the Dashboard session to scale? Thanks
    • There's a post on problems re-installing WHS 2011 Connector software on Windows 10 with anniversary update here: http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php?/topic/31019-whs-2011-and-windows-10/&_fromLogin=1#replyForm Doing a clean install of Windows 10 appears to work, but much simpler is creating the folder: C:\Windows\System32\Task\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Server  and then installing the Connector.
    • I found a solution to the Connector re-installation problem here: https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/09a41a60-1696-4341-85f8-a1373a46082e/windows-10-anniversary-update-breaks-whs-connector-install?forum=whs2011&prof=required Creating a folder named "Windows Server" in C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows allowed the installation to complete in my Windows 10 that had been upgraded in place and then had the anniversary update. The Connector was still working after the anniversary update, but Lights-Out wasn't, so I needed to re-install. I was getting the installation error described above until I created the folder C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Server
