Hello all. I am sorry if this has been asked 100 times before, but I have used search and come up empty handed.

I have a Mediasmart Home Server. There is a folder on my server that only I want access to. I have gone in as the server Administrator and ensured that only my user account has "full" access to that particular folder, however when I access the scanned folders using my Wife's PC, logged in as her, I have complete access to the contents of the folder I have only given myself permission to access. Herr account is set to "none" on that folder, yet she has full access.

What else do I need to do to make this folder private?

Sometimes access level changes take a little while to kick in. Have you restarted your wife's PC and logged in again?

I have rebooted her PC, but I did not reboot the Home Server, I will give that a go and report back.

Why? Aren't permissions based on NTFS, and should be checked on each access and thus be instant?

Permissions are based on NTFS but with a twist. Each share has permissions assigned to a couple of groups, one with full access and one read only. The users are moved in and out of the groups as required when you set the permissions in the console. The problem with Windows is that group membership tends to be cached and can take a while to register any changes. Normally is should be checked when you log in, but experience has shown even this does not always perform as expected.

Well rebooting the server did not help. Both her computer (Windows 7 64 bit Beta 7000) and the server were rebooted, but she still has full access to the folder. Maybe it is a glitch in Windows 7. She had no access when she ran Vista 64 bit prior to the switch to Windows 7 in January.

Well I have a slim PC sitting in the living room under the TV with W7 (7000 build) on it and it works great. WHS and all of my computers get along wonderfully.
The only Issue I have is that Even though I created a full access profile for the W7 pc, I can not access the shared folders from that pc.
The Console and everything else works as it should and I can browse all the folders in the console...but if I try to open the shared folders I get an Access Denied because W7 can't link/read/connect.

It SEEMS to be W7 that's unhappy and not WHS. I've run all the troubleshooters that W7 has and it only gives me Error 237 or something like that.

Anyone know how to get around this?

Hello all. I am running Windows 7 beta 64-bit and am running into problems with the new WHS Media Center functionality.

After upgrading my WHS to PP2, under Windows 7, I am not getting the Windows Media Center Connector installer to appear in my Start Menu. I first tried to completely uninstall the WHS Connector and reinstall it and still no go.

I have a dual-boot setup with Vista 64-bit installed, and which previously did not have the WHS Connector software installled. I installed it in the same manner as in my Windows 7 setup, from the shared folder on my home server, and it did add the shortcut to my Start menu to install the Media Center Connector. So I tracked down the installer and found it is placed under Program Files\Windows Home Server.

I booted back to my Windows 7 setup and checked the corresponding folder there and there is no setup program for the Media Center Connector. So I uninstalled again, completely deleted the contents of Program Files\Windows Home Server, and reinstalled the WHS Connector again, and same thing. It's not putting the Media Center Connector installer in the Program Files\Windows Home Server directory.

In a last ditch effort, I tried to run the installer from the Vista partition under Windows 7. It fires up, but after prompting me for the WHS password, it comes up with a red X and an "Unknown error". I have verified that the Media Center option is showing up in the Settings area of my WHS, so I'm at a loss at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am running Windows7 beta and I recently purchased a new MediaSmart 750GB model. I have successfully installed the connector software on my Win XP pro dekstop. I tried installing the connector software on my Win7 laptop by using the instructions here But I always get the operation cannot be completed at this time. I have tried this wireless and wired to the router. I have also tried using the connector software (same as I did for my win xp machine) and I get the same results. I have made sure my firewalls are turned off I have tried links instructions on another Windows XP laptop and it works. The only place I am getting issues with is on my Win7 laptop. I have PP2 installed on the WHS.... any suggestions? any help or insight is GREATLY appreciated.

Here is the screenshot showing the error in IE and by using the connector software and showing that the FW is turned off.

Ah... thats why. The fact that the "55000" page isn't come up is the culprit. That "website" is how the connector software communicates with WHS. If that isn't running, then your screwed. I would recommend doing a server recovery. If you don't want to do that, remote desktop into the server, check IIS, and make sure the "WHS Website" is running.

The strange thing is that another laptop running XP Pro can go to http:// <servername>:55000 and I can download the software. I will try this tonight when i get home.

IIS says the WHS Site is running. Like I said above its puzzling bc it works on my girlfriends Win XP Pro Laptop. Another thing I forgot to mention was my laptop is used for work and is joined to the work domain. Would that cause an issue when I am at home connecting to my home network via my wireless router? I have attached a screen shot of showing IIS is running the WHS Website.

Ah, yeah. It's probably the config for you're works domain. You may need to dig up computer management and change the firewall settings from there.

Another interesting development is that if I go the http://<ip address of server>:55000 I can get to the download page BUT if I click the download link but it doesnt find my server. I get the orginal error stating that is cant be located. Also I can click Start> Run> and do \\servername or \\ipAddressOfServer and see the shared folders. It looks like a name resolution issue. I have added an entry in the host file statically for the server but that didnt fix this. Any more input would be greatly appreciated.

I've been trying for 3 nights now to get a Windows 7 computer to connect to my WHS, unsuccessfully.

Posted Image

That's the error I get when trying to install the connector software from the CD. I've also tried the method in the link that's posted earlier in this thread. The Windows 7 machine cannot locate my WHS at all so that method to download the latest version won't work either.

I've noticed that Windows 7 has or will create a Homegroup network and I cannot get it to simply add itself to my already existing home network. So when I open network properties I see my home network's name, also Workgroup and also Homegroup. I don't know if this is the root of my problem or not. I can delete and recreate the Homegroup network over and over but so far have been unable to add the computer to my network.

I have the following computers on my network;

HP system in dual-boot so it has WinXP MCE 2002 / Windows 7 32 bit
Self-built rig running WinXP Pro
Another self-built rig also running WinXP Pro
Another one I built that runs WHS

My router is the Linksys WRT610N, all computers are currently running wired to the router. Everything works just fine except the Windows 7 cannot find my WHS.

How strange, Windows 7 is picked up as Windows 7 Ultimate on my WHS! I think each persons experience is definitely dependant on what build of Windows 7 they are using as well.

I installed Windows 7 on my HTPC, and after installing PP2 on my WHS it has really made the machine so much easier to use. After installing the Media Centre connector, it has added all my music, videos/moves and pictures from my WHS libraries directly into the Windows 7 libraries with no configuration - therefore whether I have Windows Media Centre open, WMP12 or just browsing through the libraries, I can see my entire WHS media storage seamlessly.

All other aspects, backup etc are working perfectly with Windows 7 build 7068 32-bit, so I am definitely eagerly awaiting the fully release of Windows 7 :-)

Well it turns out that an antivirus program I installed also came with a built-in firewall. Duh!

Once I turned that off, everything clicked.

I just did a system restore of my 64-bit windows 7 backup (had a failing hard drive) and after having a few issues with the network drivers for the restore, it finally completed. After pressing Finish and rebooting, it starts up with a "no bootable devices" message!

Please, please, please what should I do! I've tried it twice now with the same results. :(
